Butty privacy policy
Butty is a UK canal navigation app made by Flynn Davies. Contact: hello@buttyapp.com.
The short version
The Butty app does not collect, store or share any personal information. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Everything the app does happens on your phone.
The only personal information we hold is the email address you give us if you sign up for launch emails on this website, and any email you choose to send us.
Your location
If you allow it, Butty uses your phone's location to show where you are on the map, follow your boat during a journey and work out how far you have to go. Your location is processed only on your phone. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and the app does not keep a record of where you have been.
You can turn location access off at any time in your phone's settings. Route planning still works without it.
Map tiles
To draw the map, Butty downloads map images ("tiles") from the providers you can choose between in the app: OpenStreetMap, Esri (satellite imagery) and OpenTopoMap (terrain). Like any website, these providers receive your phone's IP address and the area of map being requested, so they can send the images back. Butty does not send them anything else. Their own privacy policies explain how they handle this.
Settings stored on your phone
Your boat profile (name, length, beam, speed, lock pace), recent searches and display preferences are saved on your phone so the app remembers them. They never leave your device and are deleted if you uninstall the app.
Bug reports
The "Report a bug" button opens your own email app with a pre-filled message that includes your boat profile settings, so we can reproduce the problem. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send that email. If you do, we use it only to fix the problem and delete it when it is no longer needed.
Website and launch emails
If you sign up on buttyapp.com, we collect your email address so we can tell you when Butty launches. We send one email at launch, and maybe one before. We don't use it for anything else, and we never sell or share it.
The sign-up form is handled by Netlify, the company that hosts this website. Netlify stores form entries on its servers in the United States, under its data processing terms. Like any web host, Netlify also processes your IP address to serve the site and keep it secure.
We keep your address until you ask us to remove it, or until we no longer need it for launch news, whichever comes first. To be removed, email hello@buttyapp.com.
The website sets no tracking or advertising cookies and has no analytics. If you use the light/dark switch, your choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us.
Children
Butty is not aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
Changes
If a future version adds features that involve personal information (such as accounts or saved trips), this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the change will be described in the app.
Your rights
The Butty app holds no personal information about you. If you've signed up for launch emails or sent us an email, you can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. For any of these, or any other question, contact hello@buttyapp.com. You can also contact the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
